As the weather begins to drop and we decorate our homes with pumpkins, pumpkins and more pumpkins, we should also remember to take advantage of the not-yet-freezing weather to prep our homes for winter. So while you're outside raking leaves, here are some seasonal maintenance tips you'll want check off your list:
1. Clean your gutters
Clogged gutters can wreck havoc on your home and leave you with water in your basement. Clogged gutters are also more prone to rust, so before the trees are bare this fall, clean your gutters and cover them with gutter guards to keep the leaves out.
2. Seal air leaks
Save on your energy bill and seal up those air leaks to keep the cold air out of your warm home. Weatherstripping is easily the most cost-effective way to seal unwanted drafts.
*Tip: If you suspect a problem with your weatherstripping, try closing a door or window on a strip of paper. If the paper slides easily, your weatherstripping isn't properly sealing the opening.
3. Inspect your roof
Check ridge shingles for cracks and wind damage. Look for damage to metal flashing in valleys and around vents and chimneys. Scan the entire roof for missing, curled, or damaged shingles. Look in your gutters for large accumulations of granules, a sign that your roof is losing its coating, which can portend larger problems.
4. Clean your furnace filter
Keep your home toasty and your utility bills down by cleaning your filters. Disposable filters can be vacuumed once before replacement. Foam filters can also be vacuumed, but don't need to be replaced unless they're damaged.
5. Prep your lawn
Rake those leaves, fertilize and winterize your lawn and flower beds, trees and shrubs so they can enjoy their winter beauty sleep.
